Land In Carmarthen Proposes 1,000 New Homes For Area
Carmarthen could see 1,000 new homes being built there as a scheme todevelop the new homes was one step closer after the council there approved theplanning guidelines. The guidance that has been approved by the Council’sexecutive board will make it far easier now for developers to be able to buildthe homes and other businesses in the site that is set in 130 hectares of landwhich is situated to the west of Johnstown. The councilor who is theexecutive member of regeneration said that “it’s exciting for Carmarthen andthe sooner we can commence with it the better.”
It is thought that the scheme will be over a period of 15 years. Thiswill include the building of a relief road, which will connect to the A40 dualcarriageway at the Travellers Rest to the junction of College Road,Pentremeurig Road and Jobs Well Road.
Mark James, Council chief executive said, “It will provide not only relieffor that part of town, but will allow for the university to continue with itsexpansion. There is the possibility of a new school coming on board andsome new businesses as well”.
Another Councillor called for the guidance to include advising developers toinclude solar panels on the roofs of homes. Also for these homes, to bebuilt on a mixture of agricultural land but also on the former St David’sHospital site, to be of the highest environmental standards. However, MrJames said that the council could not insist that this had to occur.
Eifion Bowen, head of planning in the council, said that the authority didnot have the £4.5million needed to build the 1.7 kilometre link road and thatthe county would therefore levy a “roof tax” on each of the propertiesbuilt. Each section of the road built would be paid for by each set ofhomes built.
